WEEK ONE: THEORY OF MUSIC

Music is the art of producing pleasant sounds by singing or playing musical instruments. Music expresses feelings, ideas, and culture.

Meaning of Theory of Music

Theory of music is the study of the written symbols and rules used in music. It helps us read, write, and understand music.

Importance of Music

  1. Entertainment

  2. Communication of feelings

  3. Cultural expression

  4. Education and learning

  5. Relaxation

  6. Religious and social activities

Musical Sounds

There are two main types of sounds in music:

  1. Musical Sound – pleasant and organized sound

  2. Noise – unpleasant and unorganized sound

Staff (Stave)

The staff is made up of five horizontal lines and four spaces on which music is written.

The Musical Alphabet

The musical alphabets are:

Clef

A clef is a sign placed at the beginning of the staff to show the pitch of notes.

Types of clef:

  1. Treble clef

  2. Bass clef

Notes and Rests

  • Notes are musical symbols that show sound.

  • Rests are symbols that show silence in music.

Names of Notes

  1. Semibreve

  2. Minim

  3. Crotchet

  4. Quaver

  5. Semiquaver

Time Signature

Time signature shows:

  • The number of beats in a bar

  • The type of note that receives one beat

Examples:

  • 2/4

  • 3/4

  • 4/4

Bar and Bar Line

  • A bar is a section of music.

  • Bar lines divide music into equal bars.
