The Ones Who Stayed
A Smile That Knew Too Much
“Welcome back… Obi.”
The words echoed in his mind long after they were spoken.
Obi stood frozen.
The man in front of him smiled… but there was something wrong with it. It wasn’t warmth. It wasn’t joy.
It was recognition.
As if Obi had been here before.
The Village That Breathes
Obi stepped deeper into the village.
At first glance, everything seemed normal people walking, cooking, talking. Life continued as if nothing had ever happened.
But the longer he watched… the more it felt wrong.
Their movements were too perfect.
Their voices too synchronized.
Their laughter… slightly delayed.
Like echoes trying to imitate life.
The First Crack in Reality
A child ran past Obi.
For a moment, everything felt normal.
Until the child stopped.
Slowly… unnaturally slowly… the child turned his head.
Not his body.
Just his head.
Until it faced Obi completely.
And then,
He smiled.
You Were Here Before
Obi stumbled backward.
“This… this isn’t possible,” he whispered.
The man from earlier stepped closer.
“You don’t remember?” he asked softly.
Obi shook his head.
The man’s smile widened.
“You came here… ten years ago.”
The Memory He Lost
And suddenly
It hit him.
Fragments.
Broken pieces of memory rushing back.
The night the voice called him…
He didn’t stop at the door.
He opened it.
He walked into the forest.
He followed the voice.
And he found the village.
The Truth
“You entered,” the man said calmly.
“You answered.”
“And when you did… the village chose you.”
Obi’s chest tightened.
“Chose me… for what?”
The man leaned closer.
“To replace one of us.”
The Real Horror
Obi looked around again.
This time… he saw it clearly.
The villagers weren’t alive.
Not really.
They were… preserved.
Held in place.
Frozen between time and something else.
Something ancient.
Something hungry.
The Cycle
“Every ten years,” the man continued,
“the village must take someone new.”
Obi’s breathing became uneven.
“And if it doesn’t?”
The man’s smile disappeared.
For the first time… his face became something else.
Something darker.
“Then it takes everyone.”
The Twist
Obi tried to run.
But his body wouldn’t move.
His feet felt… rooted.
Like the ground was holding him.
Or claiming him.
“Do you understand now?” the man asked.
Obi shook his head, panic rising.
“You never left, Obi.”
Silence.
“You were allowed to forget.”
The Final Realization
The world around him began to shift.
The village.
The people.
The forest.
All of it… bending.
Revealing something beneath.
Something ancient.
Watching.
Waiting.
And then
The voice returned.
Not from the forest this time.
But from inside him.
“Obi…”
To Be Continued…
